Ebook About Soon to be a Major Motion PictureNational Book Award Finalist—FictionIn the aftermath of the Civil War, an aging itinerant news reader agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel of historical fiction from the author of Enemy Women that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust. In the wake of the Civil War, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings from newspapers to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence. In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forming a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself.Book News of the World: A Novel Review :
First and foremost, there are no quotation marks in this book. You have to figure out the dialogue, because the editor and author totally dropped the ball. It took me twice as long to read this book because of rereading paragraphs of dialogue. This drove me crazy. If not for the book being chosen for my book club, I would not have read it.Speaking of book club. Of the 16 women that attended, 14 did not like the book. There is basically two characters, not a lot happening, not a lot of character development. It was slow, boring reading. Cannot understand the award or all the stellar reviews. It just was not that good and I would not recommend it to anyone. The subject may be important, but a news article/short story might suffice. Growing up in North Texas, and as a big fan of historical fiction, I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, I really, really did not.The book is about an old man / war hero who escorts a young girl (Johanna) back to her family. Johanna's parents were killed, and she kidnapped, at age 6 by Kiowa Native Americans. She was (unwillingly) returned to her extended family at age 10.Every character in the story is either a white hat (war hero, family man) or a black hat (pimp for child prostitutes) - there isn't any moral ambiguity, which makes the story dull and unrealistic. This girl has gone through a deeply traumatic experience, but every conflict between her native upbringing and white society's expectations is presented as a funny anecdote. (For example - she kills and steals 2 chickens, and feels proud that she has provided breakfast, while the Old Man is horrified). The author relies heavily on the trope of native american as a "noble savage." Rather than developing characters emotionally, she relies on one's natural sympathy for a lonely old man and an orphaned child. The girl very quick develops an attachment and trust with the old man, which kind of comes out of the blue. It's the emotional crux of the story, but never seemed realistic. I found it hard to really care about what was happening to the characters. Each chapter, the author also introduced another 2-3 tertiary characters, spending a lot of time on their backstory, only for them to have little action / purpose in the chapter and no significance in the broader story.Basically the entire story lacked both emotional depth and realism. If you enjoyed old TV westerns, you'd probably enjoy this book for the same reasons - it's light weight entertainment. In it's stead, I would highly recommend "Empire of the Summer Moon."
